A Centre in the Country
A Centre in the Country (no ideas but in things) is a piece of photographic work about what one might see in the so-called «province» in France. Images that were taken in the rarely interrupted stream of moments after people or animals or cars or trucks or tractors had passed by. Or before they might appear in the picture. Or else, referring distantly to William Carlos Williams poetic lines on the metaphysics of «things» (Paterson, 1946):
Say it, no ideas but in things –
nothing but the blank faces of the houses
and cylindrical trees
bent, forked by preconception and accident –
split, furrowed, creased, mottled, stained –
secret – into the body of the light!
The series inscribes itself in the ongoing investigation into the interaction of natural, man-made and social forces in the environment.
The series ist the fruit of the photographic workshop The Path As Destination with British photographers Vanessa Winship and George Georgiou and the support of Israel Ariño and Chiara Capodici. In August 2021, it took place at a refurbished farmhouse in rural France: Lababuch, a place for photography near Le Blanc, Indre, France, run by Clara Gassull and Israel Ariño.
