kelox

kelox is a kind of family history from early 21st century Switzerland. It consists of a series of staged portraits that are taken twice a year on the family sofa. Mother, father and the two daughters are depicted in the same order, as in a scientific experimental set-up. No one else is present, the father presses the remote shutter release.

The series makes the aging process of the family members visible, as well as the gradually shifting fashion and the few furnishings shown in the picture. The evolution of the four personalities and their relational fabric becomes tangible: Huis clos – the world remains outside.

The family depicted is that of the artist; kelox is hence a kind of collective self experiment.

Technically, the setting is deliberately reduced to a minimum in order to achieve the greatest possible continuity of the image content: analogue camera, highly sensitive black-and-white film with 36 exposures, available light.
